Entry Criteria

The minimum requirements are relating to that criteria:

  • Certificate IV, in any field with work experience
  • Completion or partial completion of tertiary study
  • Completion of Year 12 HSC (or equivalent), with a minimum required ATAR
  • Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC)
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

How It Works

Bachelor of Nursing degree was designed to help you develop into a confident and capable nurse. You’ll learn to look beyond an illness in isolation and focus on a person’s wellbeing as a whole. In order to help you achieve this, we’ve structured our course with only one thing in mind: giving you the best learning experience we possibly can.

The Basics

  • Each year we have three teaching periods, starting at different times to suit your availabilities.
  • You can start your study journey at any of these three intakes.
  • Once you’re in, you will have to complete a total of 23 subjects. Learn more about each subject in the WSU Handbook.
  • Out of these, 18 will be theory-based subjects and six will be professional practice experience subjects.
  • The professional practice experience subjects are split into residentials (on-campus) and clinical placements.
  • You will study two subjects every teaching period.
  • All in all, your online nursing degree will take four years to complete.

Residentials

  • Residentials form the first part of your professional practice experience (PPE) and occur in a Clinical Practice Subject.
  • A Clinical Practice Subject (CPU) is an on-campus simulated health care facility in which you will gain practical knowledge. Western’s clinical placement subjects are designed to simulate a contemporary hospital ward setting.
  • You will have to complete residentials across four years where you will learn all the practical skills to practice as a nurse.
  • Residentials will take place at one of our Western Sydney University campuses, so you will have to make sure you’re able to take time off work and any other commitments you may have.
  • The residentials will run at six different occasions. Your first residential will be the longest one and the following will then get shorter over time.

Clinical Placements

  • Clinical placements will take place in a health care facility, such as hospitals or community care settings.
  • In total there will be five sets of clinical placements throughout your degree.
  • Every set lasts for 2-5 weeks, meaning you will have to make sure you can take enough time off work and other commitments to complete your placements.
  • Placements occur at a health care facility close to where you live.

Course Requirements

WSU Online’s Bachelor of Nursing prepares graduates for eligibility to apply for registration throughout Australia as a registered nurse.

The focus of the Bachelor of Nursing is on inquiry-based learning, critical thinking and reflective practice in relation to the theory and practice of nursing in health and health breakdown across the lifespan. Using a primary health care framework, students study the application of physical and behavioural sciences to nursing; inquiry and evidence-based practice principles and utilisation within nursing; nursing care of individuals, families and groups from diverse backgrounds across the lifespan.

The acquisition of nursing knowledge and skills occurs initially in campus-based simulated clinical practice settings and consolidation occurs as students undertake clinical placements in a variety of health care settings.
